Artifacts: Konsert Thrash, Stadium Negara, KL – Wednesday, 28th December 1988

Found this huge poster while going through my junk just now. Almost 20 years ago! The “first thrash concert” indeed. Well, there were a few gigs before that but this was by far the biggest show. It was organised by Box Office, the outfit ran by Ali Bakar, who made his name bringing out all the now “legendary” rock kankang heroes (Search, Whitesteel, SYJ, Lefthanded, etc.).

I didn’t go to the show though. Can’t remember why. It’s possible that I had to work that night.

Anyway, this poster features some stupid mistakes. Punisher was tagged as “Saxo”, while the picture of Saxo was tagged as “Punisher”. So you can see Ali Bakar was pretty clueless about the bands and probably he just hoping to get on the new “thrash” bandwagon.

I had this on the wall for a few years, so the poster’s a bit fukked. And I also scribbled some “hateful” comments on the Saxo picture. Never understood why they were on the bill. First they were NOT thrash, and second they were never a part of then very small Central Market “underground” community.

The band pictures are however very rare now, I think they are all lost. I know Aru and Rosdan both have quite a humourous recollection of the show. Will get it through them soon. Meanwhile, enjoy the hair!

Some of us might wonder why Blackfire was not involved in this concert. In September 2005, Azmi Bahari, Blackfire’s vocalist told the story to Konsert Magazine:

“Ceritanya begini, konsert ini dikendalikan oleh Rosdan dari Punisher dan dianjurkan oleh Ali Bakar. Semasa pemilihan kumpulan-kumpulan yang akan terlibat dalam konsert itu, Rosdan ada mempelawa kami supaya turut serta dalam konsert ini. Beliau mencadangkan kami pergi ke pejabat pengurusan konsert ini untuk mendaftarkan diri. Tetapi apa boleh buat, terdapat beberapa kesulitan yang menghalang kami untuk beraksi. Kesulitan ini bukan datang dari pihak kami. Jika tidak, Blackfire adalah salah sebuah kumpulan yang terlibat dalam konsert bersejarah ini”
