notes: I think this is the first time The Pilgrims performed without their bassist Hili. The line-up was Lee on vocals, Abang on drums, Combat on guitar and a new friend on bass (can’t remember his name now)
Chronic Mass has always been hailed as the first proper “hardcore” band, taking in influences from the NYHC scene. I met their old vocalist Adik at the recent World Press Freedom Day gig, he’s now doing business in the tourism sector, also an avid diver off the islands in the east coast. Heard he has two kids now.
I may be wrong but I think Groovus Maximus was a bit like a mix of Infectious Grooves (ex-Suicidal Tendencies) and Faith No More, some sort of funk-metal band. Again, I may be wrong but the guitarist Adry, went on play with Naked Butterly and now sessions for normal music industry recordings and live show. I think I saw him on TV several times now, backing local pop stars.
Mutilation was an amazing grindcore band. One of the local pioneers which featured Ogy on vocals and guitar, Wan Ermie on bass and Lopong on drums. Ogy and Wan went on to form a The Cure tribute band called Fragile. Later Ogy started his own elektro project which I can’t remember the name at the moment while Wan Ermie started an elektro project called Wavefront.

Pure Pop!
It was a blast at Purepopfornowpeople concert. Whip-lashed and brain-smashed, Joe Kidd still manages this report.
Were you around the vicinity of the Atria Shopping Complex in Damansara Utama last Sunday? Well, if you were then you must have seen some weirdly attired young punks crowding the entrance to Piccadilly Club like a swarm of honey bees! No! There was no, movie shoot or an alien invasion! It was only a convention for alternative music fans, silly!
Actually it was the Purepopfornowpeople concert, bringing five bands of different genres together for a four hour show and what a blast it was!
Mutilation opened up the show with a blistering set of grindcore, (short bursts of heavy, rustic tunes coupled with razor-gargling vocals no guitar solos!).
Next up was Groovus Maximus, a bunch of kids bent on spreading the funky jittery bugs up your consciousness! Their set of fiery funk and metal hybrid managed to shake up the kids for a bit of slam-dancing while the stage tweaked and bopped under the strain of pure energetic teen spirit!
Chronic Mass is currently the best hardcore band around, and that day they played a bunch of positive hardcore covers taken from bands such as Shelter, Orange 9mm, Rage Against The Machine and Biohazard, but their own song Trapped was the highlight of the-set. A tune that show how far you can go if you would just open up your musical influences and create instead of emulate.
Then, all of a sudden, it was death metal time and none other than the best band in that league on stage, Sil-Khannaz! Garbed in their frightening stage-gear of spikes and blackness, the band launched through a set of super-tight and extremely heavy groove. Right at this very moment, there must be a horde of black-clad kids getting to terms with their whiplash due to the violent head banging that went on throughout their set!
The Pilgrims ended the show with a rather cool and mellow set but still they managed to erase the long held accusation that they were crappy on stage. For the first time, they were tighter than usual, even though some of them forgot a riff and two or a section of the lyrics.
This new found vitality was due to the recruitment of three new members, namely P.E. of Infectious Maggots, Ami of Noisemongers and a cuddly drummer called Bob.
Opting for more twangy guitar-based kind of songs, the band has found a perfect style that suits them like a glove. Just hope they will stick to that next time! As some of them said after the show; The Pilgrims is back!

again with the great nostalgia-i think amy from noisemonger was the bass player after hili-i’m not 100% sure-after that they recombobulated their line up again and saiful was on bass-i might be getting my timeline mixed up here-as for chronic mass being the first hc band?what about 2nd reject,noisemonger,skinning pit,etc?i think they slightly predate chronic mass but again i’m not sure…keep coming with the old skool flyers and bands…thanx
Dear mat, it was not Amy. It was a Kuantan boy, long, skinny fella, who was related to that chatty TV host for Melodi those days. I have his picture somewhere. He played a few shows, and only when the band split up and ressurected by Combat that Amy joined in.
As for Chronic Mass, like I said it “has always been hailed as the first proper ‚Äúhardcore” band”, meaning that there were prior suspects but as per usual sidelined by Chronic Mass’ popularity.
Here’s few 1st genaration HC band that i remember of..Shahlan ex-C.Dung was with Basic Rights, Noisemonger (NYHC with Prong influence HC) Ami is working with AH Keong record store now and he join Pilgrims somewhere 96-97 i think. Now play with Relationsheep. In Penang we have Cramp Mind front by Ah Keong Psychic Scream with bassist Zani who later with Project AK, Zani is currently working in a hotel at Langkawi with another guy from the band Hostile Disgrace. AMong these band, ther are Smog, School of Hate, Street of Hate (Johor). Also not to forget Life on The Edge and most of the early HC bands on the Under The One Roof released by Shammir As It Is.
As for Skinning Pit, they were not the 1st HC band in Perak scene. But both Disasterfunhouse and S.Pit considered the 1st generation HC band in Perak scene. Mandela was my friend (mostly hang out with metal friends and he’s also a skaters back then like most of us in Disasterfunhouse) and he also used Disasterfunhouse drummer and guitarist Mat at first when he formed Skinning Pit.
