FORUM # 1: EVERYBODY’S GOT A STORY TO TELL

Our speakers tell their zine story. Every one of them has a reason for doing a zine. Here in the Philippines, we have a long history of zine-making that goes way back to the 80s ‚Äì that’s a whole lot of zineage!

Take this time to meet new friends, build up your zinester’s network, or dialogue with one another. Find out how many different types of zines there are in the Philippines alone‚Ķ from zines that focus on a certain musical genre (metal, ska, hardcore, punk, atbp.) to more personal writings, and everything in between.

Oh yeah‚Ķ its the ZineCon’s first day (night?) off, so we’re starting with a potluck dinner. Of course, we expect you to bring your favorite dish in a prembrera, Tupperware, Pyrex {or the skull of your “favorite” politician}. All kinds of food are welcome, but plus points if it’s veg-friendly. Just don’t be an eco-meanie and bring yer food in styrofoam. You’re only inviting yourself to the terror of‚Ķ global warming.

FORUM #2: THEORY TO REALITY

DIY in the Real World; Problems, Practicalities & the DIY Debate

It’s not easy to do a DIY project. One has to think about what stuff to use (cut-&-paste vs. computer layout), how to make copies for everybody (Xerox? Riso? Offset?), where to distro your “baby”, and most of all, how to pay for it all and still have enough for your next magnum opus.

In this forum, we will talk about the nitty-gritty of DIY projects; the “tricks of the trade”: places to go for crisp, clear photocopies; where to get cheap deals in risograph/ offset printing; how to cheat the post office; putting yr zine on the internet; networking with zine kids at home & away‚Ķ all this & more!

But that’s not all‚Ķ Let’s ask why we are doing things the independent way. Why is there a need to create a culture on our own terms? What are our reasons for working outside the so-called “culture industry”? For all the problems of “doing DIY” in the Third World, why haven’t we given up yet?

There’s more to the world of comics in the nation than just Alamat or Mars Ravelo. Come and check out a horde of comics made by independent creator. Yes, these are the works that everyone and their dog would call “underground”, “marginal” and “the seemy underbelly”.

Also, check out our Panel Art Panel (Glenn and Emman of Bedbugs, Vic of Alas Dose, & Mike of Aska), a group of comic gods (snort) that we managed to kidnap from their glamorous lifestyles and busy work schedules to talk about their part in the illustrated revolution.

FORUM # 4: SAY YOU WANT A REVOLUTION

A Forum on DIY Direct Action

There are many ways to start a revolution! Find out how our speakers turned their DIY ethics into hands-on activism, away from the old-skool militant circles.

Krist and Fritz rallied against dolphin shows in Subic Bay. Ban (Local Anarchist Network) has set up vegetarian soup kitchens in the Metro area. Cecille and Boi (Dare To Care!) do radical outreach work in depressed areas. Aleksi and Arthur are queer voices in the campaign to end the harsh Vagrancy Law, and (Manila) Mayor Lito Atienza’s brutal “street-cleaning” techniques.

But social change cannot be autonomous all the time- after all, we don’t live in a bubble! Ebong (San Pablo Electoral Reform Movement) talks about teaming up with other civil society groups, while staying true to the “DIY spirit”.

If you believe that you can’t make the world a better place, in even the smallest way, I dare you to come to this forum.

A haiku: Our crafts fantasies / are real possibilities / let us all learn now. Mike shows us his technique for putting metal studs onto everything, from knapsacks to belts. Gear up with Yuki, and find out how to get that high-haired ’77 punk style. Ban will show you how to make those radical patches that you see on backpacks and jackets at punk shows and rallies alike. Want a custom t-shirt to go with that? Wendi teaches us the basics about screen-printing. And Annomi Soapworks’ Loi & Bok share their soap-making tips, so you will be able to stay clean and never have to smell like anybody else. Wa-hey! Who needs the Lifestyle Channel when you have your own quirks!

An 18 minute explosion of fringe feminism and print media, The “Grrlyshow” is a powerful and rebellious message from new voices often left unheard. Filmmaker Kara Herold examines the girly Zine revolution and culture in such a way that the film intellectually and stylistically addresses anyone’s question concerning whether or not feminism has reached its 3rd wave:
the postmodern. By interweaving head-shot interviews, clips from the zines and 1950’s television-esque vignettes, Herold clearly illustrates feminism’s ability to exist subversively within a system that generally doesn’t give women their own voice. The “Grrlyshow” successfully brings to the surface alternative voices and projects that are vital to the continuation and expansion of feminism. (18 mins. VHS)

BEYOND THE SCREAMS/MAS ALLA DE LOS GRITOS

A U.S. Latino/Chicana Hardcore Punk Documentary by Martin Sorrondeguy

An interesting and comprehensive look at the Latino/Chicano punk community and the experience within this culture. This documentary propels you into understanding the impassioned and aggressive emotions of the individuals that exist beyond the recognized realms of punk. Martin Sorrondeguy, former vocalist for Los Crudos is the producer of this powerful and uplifting documentary. Live performances by: Los Crudos, Subsistencia, Bread and Circuits and Kontra Attaque. CHERRYBOMB!

Put aside all your stereotypes about Riot Grrl… Cherrybomb!, a “mockumentary” by Fil-Am director Ernesto Foronda (Back to Bataan Beach) features Kathleen Hanna, Tammy Rae Carland, the Butchies, the Need, and other well-known faces from the grrrl revolution. They share their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and rumors that they have heard about the break-up of Cherrybomb, a fictional band from the seminal Pacific Northwest Riot Grrrl scene. In doing so, they poke fun at their own personalities, as well as the common mistakes about their womyn-centric subculture. Far from being flighty ditzes or cold-hearted man-haters, Cherrybomb! proves that these are radical wimmin with a message, but they also have a more down-to-earth, “human” side, too. (29 mins, VHS)

BACK TO BATAAN BEACH

A 16mm mockumentary by Fil-Am filmmaker Ernesto Foronda

Jesus Christ is placed side by side with images from cheesy surfing films and classic war movies, on a beach in Bataan, in a parody of Western pop culture . Styled as a movie preview, this student film was directed by Ernesto M. Foronda, a Fil-Am post-punk, who now runs Heartcore Records. (9 mins. VHS)

A DATE WITH JAO MAPA

A short film by Quark Henares, featuring Jao Mapa as himself.

Jao Mapa is the biggest teen idol of yesteryear, and Alexa is his biggest fan, the fan who loves him a little too much. When Alexa takes that love to questionably higher degrees, the results are… damn well shot. (VHS)

THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE

A co-production of the Independent Media Center and Big Noise Films, This is What Democracy Looks Like is a 70-minute documentary capturing the tide of events that transformed the Seattle WTO protests into the beginnings of a new movement. Cut from the footage of over 100 media activists, and marking a turning point in media collaboration, This is What Democracy Looks Like captures the raw energy of the WTO protests while clarifying their global and historic significance at the same time. Inside the Kitchen area of Surrounded By Water, you will find a mix-&-match display of zines, flyers, posters, albums, photos, and artwork from almost two decades of DIY culture in the Philippines. We tried our best to get our hands on as many hand-crafted subcultural knick-knacks as we could, and we hope this little retrospective will be give you a fair sample of our local zine culture. This exhibit stays open throughout the Zine Con, so there’s no reason or anybody to miss out on this little chunk of DIY history.

ZINE BAZAAR/DIY PRODUCTS EXPO

Because the stock market is over-rated and shopping malls just don’t have it! Zinesters, crafts-makers, artists, and other DIY types put their goodies up for sale in this one-day, makeshift marketplace. From zines to soap to belt buckles and candles, you’ll find almost everything from the ZineCon up for grabs here, and more. Trades are welcome, but some cash would be nice, too!

THE ZINESTERS’ CHOICE AWARDS

We hate to get on a high horse and assume the authority to give out awards, but we will anyway, so indulge us. Call it a “recognition session”, cos we’re recognizing achievements in the world of zineage. Sorry, we won’t be giving out fancy gold statues to the honorees, because gold as a valued commodity is the construct of a capitalist structure that dictates‚Ķwhere was I? Oh yeah, there be awards.
