HARDCORE-PUNK / HARDCORE
===========================
AGNOSTIC FRONT
Live at CBGB’s CD (with 2 bonus tracks with a bonus DVD)
Hardcore legends Agnostic Front brutalize their rabid fan base at New York’s famed CBGB’s with 19 ear-shattering classics, and now fans who may not have been able to attend the East Coast show can catch all the action with this release featuring the entire set as well as some bodacious bonus materials. After listening to the band tear through such tracks as “Your Mistake,” “Last Warning,” and “Friend or Foe,” cameras take a look behind the scenes in a documentary entitled “Behind the Voice” and catch up with band member Vinnie Stigma for a rare, no-holds-barred interview. A photo gallery is also included, and after watching the live performance on television, fans can take the show with them wherever they go thanks to an additional live CD that also offers two bonus tracks. ~ Jason Buchanan

FUCKED UP SOLD!
Hidden World CD
FUCKED UP’s first release for Jade Tree is cloaked in shades of unconventional aesthetics, symbolic overtones and a self-proclaimed “culture of confusion.” Hidden World, the band’s first full length studio album, marks a turning point for the mysterious Toronto band, transcending the boundaries of punk with melody, aggression, expansive structures and enigmatic diatribes on what lies underneath the immediate, visualized world. FUCKED UP combine confrontational ideologies with deliberate misinformation to produce a brutal analysis on thought provocative punk. In a word, FUCKED UP and Hidden World is dangerous and unpredictable in a time when punk has become a manufactured commodity.

DAS OATH BOOKED!
Das Oath CD
This half NY/half Netherlands hardcore punk outfit got its start in 2000. Das Oath is a fine balance between classic hardcore, structuralized arty noise, and 70’s punk rock. Mix the energy of The Germs and the progressive sound of earlier Killing Joke with the gritty noise overload of DC’s Void and the anthemic undertones of Agnostic Front and you’ll hear Das Oath – a sound no other band comes up with in the world of loud music.

RED SPAROWES BOOKED!
At The Soundless Dawn CD
Red Sparowes is a Los Angeles post-rock band comprising current and former members of Neurosis, Isis, Halifax Pier, Angel Hair and Pleasure Forever. Their sound is characteristic of soundscape-influenced experimental rock, with an otherwise uncommon extensive use of a pedal steel guitar.
This is their debut album, a double-CD pack released by Neurot.

JESU SOLD!
Lifeline CDEP
“Lifeline” contains four of Justin K. Broadrick’s most refined tracks of shoegazed metallic abandon, one of which features Swans diva of doom, Jarboe. “Broadrick’s music comes over the stereo like its own weather pattern, an experience with more layers and detail than even 10 or 20 listens can trace out” – Pitchfork. “Arguably the most influential single figure in extreme music over the last two decades” – Popmatters.
(RM40)
JESU SOLD!
Conqueror CD
Jesu returns with nearly an hour of weighty, otherworldly heaviness that defies the default designation of metal. The opening titular cut has as much in common with early Pink Floyd as it does with band member Justin Broadrick‚Äôs other outfits, Napalm Death and Godflesh. That said, there’s plenty here to enrage the savage beast, such as the dark and detuned opening of “Old Year,” the icy epic “Mother Earth” and the recording’s centerpiece, the restless and imaginative 10-minute Flaming Lips-esque “Weightless and Horizontal,” which displays the band’s debt to space rock without apology and without any sacrifice of aforementioned heaviness. The work laid here suggests that Jesu has much more exploring and refining to do but this recording is as good a place as any for listeners to begin anticipating the moment when this outfit climbs up from the underground to reap the rich rewards it so clearly deserves. A fantastic and darkly inspiring work.‚Äì‚ÄìJedd Beaudoin

GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR! BOOKED!
Lift Your Skinny Fists 2xCD
Canada’s Godspeed You Black Emperor raise the ante on their already ambitious orchestral rock by releasing a double CD of material as their second full-length album. The group combines the drums and guitar of typical rock-band instrumentation with horns and strings to create a music built around drones and slowly evolving melodic figures. It rises and falls from delicate introductory passages to unabashed grand climaxes. Their juxtaposition of drums with violins and lush romantic tonality brings to mind Rachel’s, but their compositional scale and the pounding repetitive intensity of their dynamic peaks evoke Glenn Branca’s The Ascension.
Although the two discs are indexed at only two 21-minute tracks each, the package includes a handy road map to the movements into which each is subdivided. The opening piece starts with five minutes of a 15-beat circular melodic pattern that is gradually embellished as the volume swells to an ecstatic roar. The release drops down to a pastoral drone that rebuilds to support an acid-etched guitar solo, which in turn yields to a unified 4/4 kraut rock pound that eventually explodes, leaving behind field recordings of public announcements mingled with wandering late-night Swell Maps piano. The other pieces use a similar set of sonic building blocks to take the listener on comparable journeys.
Fans of Godspeed’s previous work will be very happy, and the curious might want to hop on board as well. –Bob Bannister

PELICAN BOOKED!
City of Echoes CD
the band that brought you australasia and the fire in our throats will beckon the thaw (decibel magazine’s album of the year for 2005) returns with opus number three, a series of (r)evolutionary instrumental ruminations on touring and the homogenous effects of globalization. with shorter songs and expanded catchiness, city of echoes is pelican’s “pop album,” according to guitarist laurent schroeder-lebec, a deftly executed reminder that these dudes can do whatever they feel like and still make those hairs on the back of our necks stand up like tiny little boners. which is a-okay by us, because whenever lsl and fellow guitarist trevor de brauw join forces with the now-la-based herweg brothers–larry (drums) and bryan (bass)–to form the ultimate instrumental quadrangle, it’s all shazzam! and the next thing you know, they’re dropping so many suckas with all those sweet, victorious riffs that it begins to feel like chicago in july, when everybody’s air-conditioners simultaneously shit the bed and the old folks start piling up like logs at the city morgue. when the heat wave passes and the humidity subsides, the pelican dudes stand on top of the proverbial heap, possibly hoisting a chalice of some type–maybe even a sword, but not in a manowar kind of way–as the reverberations from their own amplified gloriousness rain upon their heads (and all of our heads, really) like manna from heaven. amen.

SUNN O))) SOLD!
Black One CD (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Sixth and darkest album yet from the Sunn0))) camp. They continue with their collaborative efforts, inviting OREN AMBARCHI, John Weise (BASTARD NOISE), Wrest (LEVIATHAN, LURKER OF CHALICE), and Malefic (XASTHUR, TWILIGHT). Progressive yet primitive sub-sonic sounds from the deep.

KHANATE SOLD!
Khanate CD (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Khanate was an extreme doom metal supergroup that brought together James Plotkin and Alan Dubin, two members of the defunct band OLD (AKA Old Lady Drivers), as well as Tim Wyskida (of Blind Idiot God and Manbyrd) and Stephen O’Malley (of Burning Witch and Sunn O))) fame).
Keeping some similarity to O’Malley’s previous band Burning Witch, Khanate produced songs that usually exceeded the 10 minute mark, characterised by extremely slow tempos, harsh layers of feedback and vocalist Alan Dubin’s torturous shrieking.
One of the most original and innovative bands in the field of doom metal, Khanate took fundamental elements of doom and took them to an almost abstract extreme, creating tension with dissonance, timing, and Plotkin’s electronic effects.
Japanese limited edition issue of the classic album in a deluxe, miniaturized LP sleeve replica of the original vinyl album artwork.
(RM75)
KHANATE SOLD!
Thing Viral CD (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Seriously, what kind of mind produces music like this? This is unbelivably slow, and so far beyond the typical “Doom” metal genre that they fall in, I don’t know what to call it. It’s also the BEST horror movie soundreack ever. Alan Dubin’s vocals range from a chilling whisper, to a horrific scream. Check out the last track, Too Close Enough To Touch. If you don’t feel like hiding in a corner and contemplating sucide, you are not human.
For fans of Boris, Earth, and The Melvins, this may or may not be for you. The influences are there, but Khanate have definetly taken these influences and made them their own. Listening alone at night is recommended.

KHANATE SOLD!
Capture & Release CD (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Capture & Release was the final album (although there are rumours of another as-of-yet unreleased album) by the Drone doom metal band Khanate. It was released in 2005 and is on the Hydra Head label.
The album contains only two tracks, “Capture” and “Release,” both of which provide the album its name.

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY BOOKED!
All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone CD (Japanese Pressing)
Sometimes Explosions in the Sky start with a whisper and end with a scream, but on “Birth and Death of the Day”, they begin with a scream and proceed into a symphonic odyssey that Aaron Copland might have composed if he’d played electric guitar. Like Copland, EITS are cinematic, but with more kinetic drive than any film–except maybe Koyaanisqatsi–could match. Compositions like “It’s Natural to Be Afraid” take you on epic journeys that roar like a Harley Davidson one minute and slip into taut contemplation the next, using the slow-tension build that EITS have perfected. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone was produced by John Congleton, who has worked with lo-fi groups like the Roots and the Mountain Goats. That might explain why the album lacks the atmosphere of EITS’s monumental The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place and their Friday Night Lights soundtrack. Instead, they rely even more on the arc of their compositions and the integral twin lead guitar lines that never solo but always drive the songs. They can shift from power-chord aggression to the sound of plucked mandolins in an instant. This is progressive rock for people who weren’t even born when prog reigned supreme. It’s the sound of King Crimson, transmuted through punk and grunge aesthetics. –John Diliberto

DEATH METAL / DOOM / GRIND
==========================
DEICIDE
The Stench of Redemption CD
Many critics have praised this album as a return to form for Deicide, despite the band losing both Eric and Brian Hoffman, the two founding members. There is a noticeable change in the guitar work, as guitar leads are much more prevalent and sometimes even reach epic proportions (a good example being the closing cut, “The Lord’s Sedition”, which is not only the longest Deicide song to date, but also notable for the moody, dark, clean guitar intro). The style of the solos on the album is also drastically different than it has been on previous Deicide records. Ralph Santolla and Jack Owen utilize a neo-classical style of guitar soloing along with the traditional riffing of Deicide. Many fans have also noticed Glen’s trademark double-tracked vocal style sounds better than it has in years.

KATATONIA
Discouraged Ones CD
Now re-mastered and re-issued, here comes another classic offering from Sweden’s Katatonia in the shape of their third album from 1998. Features bonus tracks in the shape of ‘Quiet World’ & ‘Scarlet Heavens’. The track ‘Quiet World’ comes from the Discouraged Ones recording session. ‘Scarlet Heavens’ is a rare track dating all the way back to 1994. ‘Discouraged Ones’ was recorded July-August 1997 at the infamous Sunlight Studios by Fred Estby and Tomas Skogsberg (Entombed, Dismember, etc). The album saw a new direction change with the epic compositions of old replaced with stripped down, compact structures to make room for new vocal harmonies courtesy of Jonas Renkse (who also played drums on the album), putting an end to the growling vocal style from before and giving the band a much broader appeal.
(RM47)
DEAD MEADOW
Feathers CD
Very few bands have what it takes to leaven their stoner rock with equal parts melody and exploratory noise. Their exhilarating fourth album, Feathers, is the DC-based group’s best album by far, thanks in no small part to the addition of second guitarist Cory Shane. Half the album is so good–and so eclectic–it brings to mind the bass-heavy assault of classic Blue Cheer and Sabbath, the sweet confectioner’s space-pop of Jack Drag and Brian Jonestown Massacre, and the locked groove swagger of Comets on Fire and Black Mountain. Dead Meadow aren’t afraid to melt genre conventions; “at Her Open Door,” for instance, is very Zepp-y but trippy and sugar-y sweet‚Äîalmost like Bumble Puppy, but way better. “Stacy’s Song” is levitating and beautiful, a reverb-saturated tune that showcases singer-guitarist Jason Simon’s distinctive vocals. –Mike McGonigal
(RM47)
DEAD MEADOW
Dead Meadow CD
Dead Meadow are a retro stoner psych rock power trio playing fuzzed out space-jams in a heavy and rollicking yet still kinda mellow mode. For fans of Blue Cheer and their fellow Tolatta act Spirit Caravan. They’re also reminiscent of a more jammed-out, psychedelic Sleep, but with some gentle touches — there’s even interludes of acoustic guitar indie-pop. This one grew on us! [See!] It’s definitely more “out-of-time” than most other stoner rock efforts, harking back not to the arenas of the ’70s but to the garages and hippie pads of the late ’60s. As such it stands apart from the current legions of Kyuss / Fu Manchu clones.
(RM47)
DEAD MEADOW BOOKED!
Shivering King & Others CD
Dead Meadow set a new high water mark for lunacy delivered with absolute sincerity. More cohesive, focussed, and mind-numbingly heavy than all their previous LPs put together, and that is saying alot. Like Spacemen3 and Black Sabbath getting stuck in the Brundle teleporter and coming out the other an improbable amalgam.

NIHILIST SOLD!
1987-1989 CD
Nihilist was only a footnote in the burgeoning Swedish death metal scene of the late ’80s, but they were an important footnote. Four of Nihilist’s members — singer L.G. Petrov, guitarist Alex Hellid, bassist Johnny Hedlund, and drummer Nicke Andersson — went on to become members of Entombed, one of the most important bands in the history of Nordic death metal.
The main focus of The Nihilish Demos is, as the title indicates, demos that the short-lived band recorded in 1988 and 1989. Nihilist never provided an official full-length album, and these demos are the only chance to hear what they sounded like in the studio. Not everything on this disc is by Nihilist — the last three tracks are from Entombed’s But Life Goes On demo of 1989. But Nihilist is the main focus, and their demos capture the primal, raw, punk-minded spirit that death metal had in the beginning. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

REVEREND BIZARRE SOLD!
II: Crush The Insects CD
“Crush the Insects” is finally here, the second full-length album of the Finnish True Doom trio (yes, 2nd, do not get confused, the band considers the 74-minute long “Harbinger of Metal” as an extended EP, and so is the case with the 65 minute long “Return to the Rectory” CD full of new material that was included as a free bonus in Spikefarm’s re-issue of their debut album; so second it is, who am I to argue?). So, how’s this album compared to the previous releases? Well, the main difference is that the speeds have increased. In the past, REVEREND BIZARRE has gotten us used in ultra slow doom metal compositions with occasional outbreaks. In “Crush the Insects” next to the creepy torturing slow songs we also find faster ones, yet still very much doom metal, and of course of the true authentic variety (it couldn’t be otherwise!). So in other words, the new album is more varied. – Metal Invader

REVEREND BIZARRE SOLD!
In The Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend CD
At last! It’s been a lot of time since a really good new pure doom band has appeared. REVEREND BIZARRE is a Finnish trio, true believers of the cult of the Holy Four (a.k.a. BLACK SABBATH or simply the best band in the world ever!) that have studied the teachings of their evangelists CANDLEMASS, SAINT VITUS, THE OBSESSED, TROUBLE and decided to pay tribute and follow their direction. Accordingly, REVEREND BIZZARE play old school traditional doom. In their music purity is the key word. The best description that I can give about their music is the following: Imagine something like CATHEDRAL’s debut “Forest of Equilibrium” but simpler and with clean vocals. РMetal Invader
