Somebody tried to tell me of this talk a few nights ago but the poor guy can’t pronounce “Czech Republic” properly. So I asked him to write an email instead. Anyway, according to the “news bearer”, Kokolia Vladimir is pretty special, in a way that he was doing political art, performances and also music DURING the communist years of his country (before it was overthrown by the Velvet Revolution).

And so I do wonder if this Kokolia fella knows Vaclav Havel personally. A google seach turned up a lot of sites in Czech, but luckily there’re a few in English (links down there). Anyway, I found out that the guy also played (not sure if they are still on!) in a band called E, an experimental, peformance art meets art-rock/post-rock trio ( I think lah!).

Art Space Gallery and the Embassy of the Republic of Czechoslovakia cordially invite you to our event ‘guest’.

Artist, performer as well as an art academician Kokolia Vladimir of the Czech Republic will show, discuss and exchange opinions on topics of his works, his journey in the arts and culture and his art scene.

Kokolia Vladimir received his MFA degree from the Academy of Fine Art in Prague in 1981. In eighties Kokolia was recognized as a cult drawer, with hundreds of sarcastic drawings of the Big Cycle.

During the nineties, he received international attention with his paintings which integrate representational motives with patterns, and physical gesture with meditation. In 1990, Kokolia became the first winner of the prestigious Jindrich Chalupecky Prize, and consequently, he stayed for six months as ! artist in residence at the Headlands Centre for the Arts in San Francisco.

Kokolia has been the subject of more than 90 solo exhibitions, and his work was included in about 360 group shows. In 1992, he was the only Czech artist participating in the Documenta IX in Kasel, Germany. Kokolia’s work has been collected at the SMAK in Gent, at Albertina in Vienna and National Gallery Prague.
