About our overseas guests:
st//ll
Presented by Joel Ong and Mark Wong
In non-Euclidean geometry, a pair of parallel lines may finally meet on a point at infinity. In this Ever-Reaching into boundless continua is a constant flow of flux, a plane of immanence, a movement in stillness. Building on the graphical notations by composers from Cage to Cardew, the artists have composed a “video score” of lines and grains that will then be performed by a transmutation of signals across the sight/sound boundary. On top of this interpolation of visual cues is the additional element of improvisational interactions between the two performers to create a matrix of multi-logues.
st/ll (pronounced “still”) does not attempt to find a conclusive visual-musical language, although the themes of continuity, repetition, dynamism and space are both fields of sight and sound. What it tries to reveal, through the course of the performance, are the interpretations around these central themes, where, through the conversations of both artists welding their instruments as mouthpiece, we find sympathetic resonance and serendipitous dissonance in the melding of parallel minds.
Joel Ong is a guitarist, improviser, and media artist from Singapore. He is often found buried under layers of electrical textures composing for performance, dance and other gratifying endeavors.
Mark Wong is a self-styled ‘soundscraper’ who creates music from a variety of electronic and acoustic sources. His most recent projects include a electronic pop band named Hyacinth and Magazine.
Robert Mayson is a prolific sound-artist and musician from Melbourne Australia. He has been a solo performer, improvisatory collaborator, and a member of numerous musical ensembles since 1997. Live, Robert’s solo performances centre around loud, meditative drones and clusters of noise created via microphones, bass guitar and an assortment of electronic effects. Robert also currently and regularly performs, tours, and records with such groups as: improvised noise-rock trio Grey Daturas, sludgy doom-metal ensemble Whitehorse, spontaneous noise-core outfit Collapsed Toilet Vietnam, and free rock trio Oren Ambarchi/Robbie Avenaim/Robert Mayson.
