Teenage Mutant

Pictured above is a band called Teenage Mutant from Alor Star, Kedah in 1987. Second from left is Fathullah Luqman AKA Fathul Maggots AKA Fathul Spiral AKA Romatikarat. I’ve heard about this band for a long, long time but has never seen a picture or anything else to substantiate the existence of this band. According to Fathul then, this is his first band, way before he came to KL and got heavily involved in the scene via so many bands active in the early 90s.
I remember Fathul telling me that band was playing a mixture of Crossover HC (DRI, Suicidals etc.) and also straight up early punk rock covers. This makes Teenage Mutant one of the earliest punk bands in Malaysia; in the same school as pioneers such as Terengganu’s Mallaria & Stoned Crows and also Kuantan’s Hijrah (which later later morphed into The Pilgrims).
And in terms of Crossover (or now more popularly termed as “Bandana Thrash”), there was only one other band who was playing a lot of DRI, and they were known as The Colourful Bullets from Seberang Prai, Penang. But Colourful Bullets only started at the end of the 80s and played in KL in 1990.
Have Teenage Mutant ever recorded anything? Well, I have to ask Fathul to be sure but I doubt it. The band also never came to KL to play; I also doubt that the band ever did a gig. Still, for a bunch of kids tackling punk/HC in 1987, Teenage Mutant is surely a rare group.
Fathul, as many of us have known, went on to work with Flowers Decay, Deflowered, Spiral Kinetic Circus and Infectious Maggots, before stopping to concentrate on being a visual artist and also dabbling in comics.
Currently, the man is back in the music scene. First via becoming a successful songwriter for now mainstream names such as Flop Poppy, Def-Gab-C and more. As of recent, Fathul has started to record again. Now he’s a solo recording artist known as Romantikarat.
To those interested to hear the man in his new guise, go here:

Def-Gab-C .. din’t their drummer just get arrested for being in that sky kingdom cult?
yes. he’s well-known as “Lee Space” and he didn’t just play with Def-Gab-C. He played in almost all the bands active in the late-80s to mid-90s in the Central Market-era; from Silent Death to Slumscums etc. Lee has always been interested in the mysteries of Islam and he’s known to have followed a certain guru here and there for years. One thing for sure, he’s quite a character, a fascinating one, and a nice guy to boot.
bila dia kene tgkp?arituh elok je aku tgk ada kat depan cm.

best ke romantikarat tu?? aku rase lagi best spiral kinetic circus la…lagu iris, little green man, … joe since c.dung main laju-laju doh lening…ape kate mung buat balik deflowered mung tu…hehehee… best gile. hearfelt gile. mane gi band indie-pop best-best hah? the times?? hhehehhe
Nizang, aku ada CD Romatikarat. bagi aku, Fathul dah variasikan lagi musik dia dan Romatikarat still is the bomb!! kita takleh nak expect dia still buat lagu time zaman zaman Spiral lagi dah.. manusia dan idea sentiasa mahu berubah. itu benda semulajadi.. even, Joe pun dah ubah Dung jadi lagi ganaskan? hehe. Can’t wait for Romantikarat punya launch.
jay u memang da bomb
whoa…now yer walking me down memory lane here-i had almost forgot all about lee space-i was with him briefly in slum scum-this was back in the day, around 94 or something like that when eri alto tried to recruit me and bart from tormentor to get in on that shit-he was one of the first people who ever talked to me when i was at cm-he was a native of i think raub, pahang and he studied pondok at pasir tumbuh, kelantan if i’m not mistakenhe was always trying to get me to go upstairs for solat(with varying degrees of success)-he played in xpdc and excorcist, too i think he told me but he was the kinda guy who would jam with anyone, anywhere,at any time-he was really into his art and is hands down, one of the best drummers in the country-and he was real nice, too…he was a cm insider but he was also kind of an outsider because he was relatively more religous than a lot of the folks who hung around(myself included)…
Lee Space is surely one of the more important figures in the early scene, also one of the few who managed to crossover to the more mainstream areas without changing much. I haven’t seen him for a long while but that happens when you never go to CM anymore. By the way, the place where we always hang out, Restoran Yussof AKA Hameed had closed it’s premise many months ago, which means effectively the spot where most early underground kids hung out is no more. A pretty sad footnote there. I haven’t been to CM these few months but I heard there’s a new spot though. I just wish that the new spot allows smoking in its premise just like Hameed did.
Anyway, here’s to Restoran Yussof AKA Hameed (1985 to 2005), may the memories last.
