Singapore sound artist/musician Ang Song Ming is already a familiar name with music and sound installation aficionados here. Recording under the name Circadian, Song Ming has released numerous EPs (including Radial in 2004 and Current in 2005), and his tracks have been featured on various international compilations by established indie labels such as Fat Cat Records.

Song Ming has participated in exhibitions and performances not only in Singapore, but also abroad such as the Aqua Art Sound Broadcast in Miami in 2005, the SAND Music Festival in Hong Kong in 2006, as well as 100 Days = 100 Videos in Heidelberg the same year).

Yeoh Yin Pin is a Malaysian musician who has been creating experimental music and sound art for the last 15 years. He is also the chief founder of the Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia (EMACM), and runs a number of labels (including Xing Wu Records) dedicated to the publication of experimental and creative works.

Both artists met earlier in Hong Kong during the 2006 SAND Music Festival, and for the 2007 Fringe, they will be collaborating together for the first time to present a work entitled Unwound. This is a music performance which explores the expanded vocabulary of the guitar in different ways, through the use of prepared instruments, alternative playing methods (such as bowing) and sound samples. In doing so, the musicians aim to present the dysfunctional methods of performance as a parallel to disability, through which they are therefore compelled to investigate new ways of aural presentations.

Charles Atlas (The USA) | Panic Membranes

Charles Atlas is not a one-man act as is often mistaken, nor the now deceased bodybuilder who was dubbed ?The World’s Most Perfectly Developed Man?, but rather the moniker adopted by Charles Wyatt and Matt Greenberg from the USA for their musical collaboration which has lasted the last 8 years. Charles Wyatt was formerly from UK band Piano Magic, and Matt himself has various musical forays including Sanchez and Pianophile.

Charles is also a paralegal who plays a proud father to his daughter, Maia, while Matt has been working in the mental health field whilst pursuing his medical education ? and these aspects play a role in influencing the kind of music that the two men create.  Charles Atlas has performed in many spaces around the USA and Italy, alongside bands such as Low, Casino vs. Japan, and Do Make Say Thing. More interestingly, The Necessary Stage has used some excerpts of the band?s music in our recent productions like Mobile and Fundamentally Happy.

For Fringe 2007, Charles Atlas will be presenting a performance entitled Panic Membranes, which is a response to the experiences of the musicians in dealing with myriad disabilities and corresponding extra ability. Through their music, they seek to demonstrate how music not only serves as a point of connection amongst people, but also its restorative effect by converting our personal disabilities and anguish into art and respite. The amorphous soundscapes that they create also delve into the idea of synaesthesia? in that sonic waves can oftentimes evoke a visual rendition of sounds.
