SUFFERCATION – Day of Darkness CD Rerelease
Kelantan-born, Kuala Lumpur-based SUFFERCATION were one of the first Malaysian bands playing brutal death metal (mostly-influenced by DEICIDE). Having formed in 1988 as “SUFFOCATION” in the East Coast, they came to live in KL (at the legendary 121-C, Brickfields for a while), changed their name amd released their first demo in 1990. By 1992 the band put out their first album Day of Darkness (cassettes-only) on Valentine Sounds Production (do note: Suffercation released their album first before SIL-KHANNAZ).
Controversial to many early Malaysian metalheads, Suffercation went to be a “glam-rock/hard-rock” band by their third album. I do wonder if that’s due to the record label’s meddling or the band’s own doing. Anyway, that period may have marred the band’s reputation but the first album is still a coveted recording by many.
That debut album was re-released on CD in 2011 as “Day of Darkness: The Reawakening” with special booklet featuring lots of new info and such by Afterlife Productions. The very same year, Singapore’s Black Winds Production also re-released the album, but on CD-R. The difference being that the Black Winds version is a re-mastered version, and many said it sounded way better.
Today I saw a posting by Naza on Facebook (along with a pix) that “Day of Darkness” is again reissued on CD, this time by NSR/VSP. Apparently NSR is also re-releasing a lot of the latterday “Rock Kangkang” titles and SUFFERCATION’s debut is one of them. There’s no fanfare or any sorts of publicity done about this tho’, I checked. But I believe you could get this at any local mainstream music store.
As noted above, there had been complaints about the sound on the Afterlife rerelease, so we wonder how’s this NSR version. Does it sound better? Also, when will it be re-released on vinyl?
