PROLETAR – Back to Hatevolution Discography CD
PROLETAR
Back To Hatevolution CD
(multiple-label release)
First of all, I would like to advise you people to NOT subject yourselves to one hour plus of blasting grindcore right after waking up. You see, I spent last night reading Redemption Song: The Definitive Biography of Joe Strummer, a book that has been taking a lot of my free time these past few weeks, and this time it kept me awake until 6 am.
When I woke up at at 10 this morning, I knew that I need more of that deep slumber. My head’s thumping and eyes blurry, but this PROLETAR CD stared at me. I’ve been ignoring it for a while now, so…
Gurghhhhhh!!
Well, I lied. Thing is when I put this on, I was so inspired I spent 3 hours searching for some “grind”-related bands and recordings which I loved with much vengeance back in the days when I was sleeping on crusty, sperm-stained and lice-ridden four-inch plastic-foam mattresses in late-80s, early-90s Brickfields.
First I looked for Necrony‘s Severe Malignant Pustule demo 1991. That was a huge favourite. We had the original tape! Then I remembered another Swedish classic, General Surgery! So I trawled for their promising-but-poorly-recorded 1990 demos and that amazing Necrology 7″ released by Relapse back in 1993. And then something else hit me, what about Old Lady Drivers? Yeah, James Plotkin may now be quite a studious, academic-like “sound-artist” but back then when Earache was king, OLD tickled me pink!
And yes, I found them all! God bless mp3s! And along the way I stumbled upon another forgotten gem, Excel‘s Split Image LP from 1987! It’s not grindcore lah, but hell when it comes to classic crossover, you can’t deny Excel’s place in the pantheon of greats.
Bloody hell! I am so happy, I will not be going to the shop today. Gonna sit here and vegetate with some nostalgic noise!!
So what about Proletar? Well, this old Jakarta bunch may not be anywhere near all the bands mentioned above but their latest bunch of songs featured here (11 tracks from October 2005 and released as the Physical & Mental Torture tape) are all the bloody good! They are all pretty much in the style of old-school grindcore, when “grindcore” was grindcore and not tacked with “grind-death”. “gore-grind” etc.
The rest of the tracks, dating back to 2000 with one Ari Bowo as a part of the twin vocals attack, are pretty much fun but not-really-re-listenable exercises – throughout the years, they were experimenting with a lot of the late-90s grind/crust permutations of styles (including the lessons learned from Assuck). All good and bitching, but mostly poorly recorded, thus ripping them off their “constantly-on-rotation” promise. You listen to them once and say, “yeah! cool” but there’s no desire to rewind it for another go.
The thing about grindcore which many people forgot to mention is that it’s mostly about the “sound”. You can play triple-speed fast, you can growl and you can even temper that with some wikked contrasting twin-vocals, but without proper engineering and production values fleshing out that belly-scraping gurgling low bass, dead-on tight-snare drumming and odorous cookie-monster vocals, you are at sea. Well, at least, for me.
All of that mentioned, this is nevertheless a very good buy. Right from the nice packaging to the discographic nature of the project, Hatevolution documents Proletar from its loose but raging baby steps to the band’s current finely-focussed monstrosity. So far I’ve rotated through the first 11 tracks four times already. I’m hooked!

how about our old friends damage digital?not to mention multiplex, flesh parade, phobia, insect warfare, infectious maggots, selfmadegod, flash gordon, daughters, bukkake violence kommando-grindcore as a genre has evolved way past what it used to be and i think it’s gonna continue to be heavy (and revelant )for millennia
album kedua Discordance Axis yg berjudul Jouhou dari 1998 tetap menjadi album grindcore pujaan pemecah gegendang telingaku!
I have to admit I stopped listening to grindcore for around 10 years now. Intermittently I would go back to the old classics, the usual Nausea / Terrorizer / Repulsion / early ND / early Carcass / Righteous Pigs / Unseen Terror and those mentioned above.
This is because immediately after the first wave of grindcore bands, new shit with the more progressive post-grind leaning such as OLD’s Lo Flux Tube and Formula, the John Zorn / Micky Harris project, Painkiller and also Zorn’s grinding-jazz combo Naked City and also bands that were feeding off the grindcore / early crust vibes and making new noises (Godflesh, Fudgetunnel, Sleep etc) made all those early basic grindcore stuff rather lacking in depth – no disrespect to all of them of course but musically it currently serves as a fun bunch of nostalgic thrashing and nothing more.
One main problem is the fact that too many bands took it a bit too seriously, even ND & Carcass became po-faced, serious grinders, going boringly technical with every new album; incorporating more and more staid extreme “metal” nuances rather than the more jagged, adventurous post-punk ideas (Killing Joke, Throbbing Gristle, Swans, etc.)
Most of the grind stuff I liked also had this tongue-in-cheek character. Mostly humorous and not afraid to appear ridiculous. This is what I see with Damage Digital when I first see them. People said they ripped off Dischordance Axis, but I think they were a funny variant of that sound, something that have been carried on to this day by crazies such as Melt Banana.
To cut the spiel short, I see most current grind bands losing that naughty spark of irreverent, satirical nature. And funnily enough that includes many of them who called themselves as gore-grind or porno-grind etc., all sub-genres born out of early grindcore’s habit of making fun of everything. As a friend once said it, playing with “irony” is fun, but it cannot go on without falling flat on its face.
As for the current Malaysian hope, there’s Negation still going strong, and of course SMG with their countless releases but I like Tools Of Trade better. Ultimately though, the one than can really make me smile is none other than Onani.
TOTT mmg rawk! haha..
Mass Separation played with Proletar in Jakarta back in late 2005. They were tight!
Negation and Tools Of The Trade, no doubt two of the top crops in our local grindcore league.
on the other hand, i would recommend checking out for Blood on Wedding Dress and Infinite Delay though some of you extreme music worshippers may disagree and not see them as grindcore (mind you they dont flash Earache’s tshirts). but if you’re talking about the Indonesian grindcore scene, my favourite would be Raja Singa! their latest release on Straineyes were brilliant! Anyway, I’m keeping my eyes open for Karenaneko and Alchemy Of Sickness new releases (their previous debuts were quite promising!).
Dean pon rawk.

Les scrawl and cause and effect is very good for inventing kinda new style in grindcore genre.. I like them a lot. Its grindcore but really light and easy. anyone know other bands that played the same style as them?
correction its cause for effect!
it’s Le Scrawl. Thanks Wan. Will be checking out both bands.
By the way people, Melt Banana wanted to come here and play (along with Bangkok and Singapore), we were talking on the possibilities about a month ago but then they need “tambang terbang” from Japan and that’s beyond our reach at the moment. Ada anak-anak datuk kat sini yang boleh sponsor tak?
rakan2..check out gak band2 ni , leng tch’e & army of the flying robots.mantap, superb & padu.sound2 yg agk berat, jitu dan sedap didengar dlm jangka mase yg lame.eheheheeh..
army of the flying robots mmg ngetop! tp ntah kenapa aku sukakan sound2 yg lebih rock gitu. coliseum, doomraiders, young widows, saviours, etc sgt mencengkam! these arms are snake juga cun ala2 cave in gitu. haha…lari topic dh ni.
pergh..melt banana! gile tu. tp mmg x mampu la klu sampai cover tambang terbang merbang sume ni. this is your call org2 berkemampuan! yeah!
Cause For Effect is mad! Two guys; drum & bass, grunts, and no guitar. Reminds me of early No Means No when there were just a duo back 1979, but of course, NMN features no grind-grunts.

AxCx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anal Cunt’s releases are commonly available through all the local DIY distros and gig tables for years, boss. They have so many releases being traded about in the local scene that no one really need to mention their name.
Since you’re the supreme listener / discoverer of everything “incomparable”, I look forward for a long list of new or “unknown” bands/acts which we all should check out. That would be exciting. And don’t forget to give us them links too.
Thanks for sharing guys, will be checking these out:

Also not to forget, Japanese king of grindrock…
jeng…jeng…jeng….
C.S.S.O
grindcore + jimi hendrix = C.S.S.O.
gore beyond necropsy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gore_Beyond_Necropsy
Insect Warfare,Phobia and Assuck for old-school grindcore…what about STRONG INTENTION?They’re rather ‘strong’,as well…
insect warfare and hatred surge, that really keeps the blood pumping these days… and magrudergrind too… and if you’re fashionable, pig destroyer… strong intention is pretty sweet.
There are too many to mention here, but for me Discordance Axis and Nasum have already given a new facade to the Grindcore scene. Not to forget Rotten Sound, Asterisk and Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus too. In grind we crust!
But a deepest respect should goes to Napalm Death and Carcass contingents as they’re still waving the Grindcore flag until today since 80‚Äôs.
lycanthropy and sayyadina also cool..
Don’t forget NAUSEA from LA (side band of TERRORIZER)
Joe..
do you have any info about old grindcore act like PARASITE, SOCIAL INFECTION, MUTILATION, etcetc…
NAUSEA wasn’t from TERRORIZER. It was formed by the ashes of MAJESTY. Here’s the prove:
“MAJESTY evolved into NAUSEA. MAJESTY was just Eric Castro and myself, Jesse Pintado and Pete Sandoval were not part of MAJESTY” – Oscar Garcia explain in one interview done by Se@nocide.
raw grind as fukk ..for sure i love mighty WARSORE also check out DAHMER.sadly they all rip already.FISTFUCK also good…more noise and raw!
Yeah what did happen to Social Infection and Parasite? Not to mention Reclamation Code? They should totally reform-the atmosphere is perfect for it now
