bands:
BIRUSHANAH
– currently a trio of Iso – vocals/guitar, Sougyo – fretless bass/Japanese drums & Kohei – drums, BIRUSHANAH push and play with the boundaries of extreme metal by taking in traditional Japanese folk influences (scales and rhythm) into the band’s exploration of intricate doom/sludge ethos.
here’s what they have been saying about BIRUSHANAH:
“The Osaka band melds traditional Japanese music with the heaviest strains of extreme metal, resulting in a bastard of exotic discomfort and good ol‚Äô leadfoot crunch. Guitars crush in eerie Japanese scales, stacking wide-open chord chugs into uneven phrases and progressions that never feel resolved. A fretless bass adds to the slipperiness of Birushanah‚Äôs tonalities, and two additional percussionists clank through the herky-jerky doom riffing like imperial soldiers marching to battle.” – prefixmag.com
“BIRUSHANAH from Osaka Japan have been pummelling audiences since 2002 with their inimitable blend of industrial, doom, rock – incorporating traditional Japanese scales with junk percussion and thunderously epic, low-end riffery. Having toured extensively through the USA, Europe and Asia in recent years, Birushanah return to Australia for the third time this February.” – thedwarf.com.au
“BIRUSHANAH from Osaka, Japan play heavy sludge rock with elements of Neurosis and Envy mixed with influences of traditional Japanese music and industrial percussion. Original, epic and crushing.” – missinglink.net
Here’s a clip of them playing as a trio in December 2009:
Surely a band you don’t want to miss!
KAH-ROE-SHI
– heavy, heavy, wayyy heavy bunch!
From their webpage:
“Kah = excess, Roe = labor, Shi = death, translated literally from Japanese as “death from overwork” or occupational sudden death. Musically characterized by unrelenting heavy crust hardcore and human-system-hating lyrics.A collective of system hating armchair revolutionaries. The guilty comrades (not in hierarchical order; as it supposed to be abolish!): Kid: vocals, Tiong: guitar/vocals, Fahmi: bass, Zul: drums.”
Features members and ex-members of many important and influential bands active in the scene since the mid-90s; MASS SEPARATION, FASTGAME, AKTA ANGKASA, RECONSTRUCT, TOOLS OF TRADE etc. etc… A mixture of spastic power-violence to dark, devastated crust and everything else in-between.
ZAIKUNINGSHARKFUNG
– 2/3 of Singapore’s improv-collective AMINO ACID ORCHESTRA
ZAI KUNING as described by Substation: “As an artist, Zai Kuning deliberately complicates convenient categorization, employing a wide range of practices from video to poetry to theatre, dance, performance art, music and installation art,”
Zai had most recently toured in Japan with Otomo Yoshide and had exhibited consistently in numerous visual art exhibitions in locally and overseas.
Besides being in AMINO ACID ORCHESTRA, SHARK FUNG is also a drummer for Singapore’s improv-noise-rock supergroup I/D and electro-noise duo Engineered Beautiful Blood.

*Zai Kuning may be jamming with KL’s unwanted “kacauers” and moral-guardians THE ABANG GUARD, depending on the availability of spare time for the two old men.
THINK!TADPOLE!THINK!
– self-described as sounding like: “some stone drops, heavy rain, the wind, the sea, people mumbling, animal mating, human error, and the humanic tendencies et cetera et cetera et cetera”
Previously known as Tadpole, this trio has been seen fiddling with ukulele, saxophone, keyboards, weird things on their heads and more..
That said, THINK!TADPOLE!THINK! is still a mystery for many of us, so lets keep it that way till the night arriveth!
KHAYALL
– ultra-mega-super-mysteriouso. All we know is that it features one of the best guitarists in the scene. The other hint is: one of his bands took the name from one of the many P. Ramlee’s classics.
