Leaving Normal: Luis “Weslu” Guiang

Drummer Luis “Weslu” Guiang passed on late morning of January 18 at the MCU Hospital in Monumento. His remains lay in state at the Floresco Funeral Home #216 Gen. Luna St., Conception, Malabon.

Guiang was a founding member of seminal 80’s Philippino punk hardcore outfit G.I. & THE IDIOTS, and ska band PUT3SKA. He also banged the skins for Private Stock, Brownbeat All-Stars, and sessioned for Juan Pablo Dream, Shuffle Union and THROW (ex-Dead Ends).

There are fund-raising gigs scheduled for Weslu this week at Xaymaca (Saturday) and Bistro 70s (Friday) to help pay the hospital bills. Either drop off contributions there or go straight to the wake and hand it over to his mother or brother.

Weslu figured in a motorcycle accident with a friend after a gig with Juan Pablo Dream in Katipunan. His right leg suffered massive injuries, dislocating his pelvic bones, and shattering his knee caps. A day after his surgery to repair some broken bones, his lungs collapsed due to complications caused by “bone marrow entering a blood vein”. He was 40 years old.
