mr. Sterile Assembly: Malaysia – Java – Singapore Tour 2006

The mr sterile Assembly is a performance, avant-punk group from Wellington. It has been performing for the best part of the last 5 years, in a continually changing, anarchic and orchestrated lineup.

The group is now four; with Dave Micheal-guitar, Chrissie Butler-bass & vocals, Jeff Henderson-saxophone, and mr sterile -drums & vocals.

Here’s what Punk As Bands said about mr. sterile Assembly:

“Some bands are a little different. Some bands are REALLY different, and then there are bands like The Mr. Sterile Assembly. An eye-catching set at Punkfest 2003 was the introduction to a lot of people to this band that consists of guitars, drums, cello, clarinet, trombones, percussions, a bunch of other sound makes and “a heap of hooting and hollering”, but in fact the band have been around since 2001, and an additional 3 years before that as a solo act in the bedroom of Mr. Sterile.

The band describe themselves as “an anarchic cacophony of politics and fun”, with members coming from a suitably diverse array of backgrounds. They have had previous involvement in various musical groups ranging from punk rock, pop, celtic, jazz, ska, theatre, experimental, weird-as-fuck, make-it-up-on-the spot and beyond. Indeed, the melange of stylistic influences led to one reviewer to describe the Mr Sterile Assembly by stating their songs are “sophisticated arrangements stretch[ing] generic labels to the limit, whilst remaining foot stompingly seductive. Each member contributes fervently to the madness of the occasion, resulting in a successful blurring of the line between music and theatre”.

The band continue to look to push boundaries and try new things, appearing on several compilations and now looking to release material in the wake of a variety of Mr. Sterile solo releases. As they put it themselves, “One thing Mr. Sterile hates (amongst others) is complacency, conformity and stagnation which any musical style/type of performance/artistic endeavour/life in general is capable of falling into without constant questioning, challenging, and a willingness to put yourself somewhere outside of that good old safety zone. That’s punk”
