Zai Kuning Live in KL
The Gypsy Music of Riau Archipelago
The Ricecooker Shop is proud to help out with this show; one of the rare appearances in Malaysia by Singapore’s very the degil, very the unfathomable, enfant terrible and also our good friend ZAI KUNING.
Those who have been to the recent BIRUSHANAH’s Rice Above! show must have seen Zai appearing live alone and also with his other family THE ABANG GUARD. The man’s intense, wound-up, sinewy and rather scary! He’s THE punk rock!

ZAI KUNING:
“Zai Kuning has always remained a free-spirited and unpredictable maverick in the arts scene. Dancer, sculptor, painter, musician, filmmaker, photographer, performance artist, theatre director‚Ķ none of these terms can aptly describe Zai.
For the past six years, Zai has been exploring sound and music for theatre and film through acoustic and electronic sound. His musical style is split into two extreme forms. Acoustically, it is heavily based on Malay traditional music and rituals; electronically his sounds are heavily influenced by punk, chaos and deconstruction.” – from the upcoming Singapore Arts Fest site
ZAI on The Gypsy Music of Riau Archipelago
“What I’m playing is the Gypsy music of the Riau archipelago. It is something closely related to an island-like landscape where many are existing close to the sea. It is music as in language which was born, grown and evolved near and around the sea; where its origin remain the Austronesian language or Malayo-Poleynesian. Perhaps a kind of language which does not care much about words but how each sound is made to communicate or to touch your heart or to give you a headeache as in confusion.
The Gypsy Music of Riau Archipelago is my personal new journey/project where I will select songs which I have been playing and put it as the title suggest.”
